DUNLOP WINS.
NEW ZEALAND’S CHESS CHAMPION.
CLOSELY CONTESTED FINAL
Dunedin, Jan- 5. The final for the Chess Championship between J. B. Dunlop (Oamaru) ana A. \V. O. Davies (Dunedin) concluded today. The game was played on French defence sv stem and was closely contested till the 24th move, when Dunlop got past a pawn and broke up Davies’ position. Dunlop won a knight at the 34th move. He continued to attack strongly and Davies resigned on the 50th move. Dunlop is 34 years of age and came to New Zealand from Scotland when an infant. He learned chess in London when throwing his dental studies, and returned to New Zealand in 1906. He won the Otago Junior Championship in 1909 and the senior in 1910, He also competd in the championship at Timaru in 1910-11, obtaining fourth place. He joined the Oamaru Club in 1912*
On account of the tournament extending till to-day, the North v. South match has been abandoned.
