(Own Correspondent). The gift afternoon, held in the Town Hal', on Thursday in aid of St. Hilda’s Home, Otane, and St. Mary’s Home, in Napier, proved an unqualified success. Visitors were present from nf> parts of the district and it is estimated that, the two Homes will benefit to the extent of about £BO by the effort. During the afternoon the Chaplain of St. Hilda’s Home briefly explained the object of th° two Holnes, stressing the -good work done and than ked a'l present for the genuine interest and sympathy shown. Aftc-noot tea was provided by Airs- Davidson, assisted bv a pa"tv of willing helners, and a “geographical competition.” arranged bv Airs. Gordon Collins, •— i ed a great deal of interest. TJie pleasure of the afternoon was enhanced Lv songs contributed by Mesdames Cleary. Pilchert. Waters and the Mi sses Peterson find Williams. In the evening a dance was held wliiob with a Dutch auction, held by Mr. C-. McKay, added the sum of £lO to the funds. Among the gifts were chennes. eggs, butter, potatoes, flour. Ham. honey, meat, a pair of blankets, jam. etc. Interest was created by Mr. J. J. Langridge’s sporting offer of £2 towards the cost of a load of firewood provided the balance. £4, was made up. This was quickly contributed by Major Warren £2, Mr. Mblenoir £l. Airs. Tod, Waipawa. 10/- and Miss Waller 10/-.
