A fine tribute was paid to the Toko, maru Bay School Committee at , the latest meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board- The committee forwarded particulars of its system of school cleaning. This had been referred to the Department’s Chief Medical Officer, who characterised it as excellent. The Board’s Chief Inspector considered the system ahead of that of the Department- I was decided to have particulars of the system sent to all school committees in the Board’s district.
The recent somewhat mysterious cable suggesting the possibility of Australia and New Zealand launching State loans on the American money market has prompted a Sydney financial writer to publish the latest Wall street quotations for a number of “ foreign” Government Securities. . The prices “bid” show returns varying from about 7 per cent, for Canadian bonds to nearly 12 per cent, for Japanese were demanded, the return on even British 'stock running as high as 9 per cent, at the prices offered. This does not provide a very’ promising outlook should our Government be compelled to look to Brother Jonathan for financial relief. Paris municipal bonds brought a figure which meant little less than 15 per cent, to the buy’cr. A sensational escape from a fatality occurred on the Little Wanganui River South Westland, on Wednesday. Mr. Malcolm Houston, a well-known auctioneer, his wife and a passenger in a motor ear were being towed across the river, which was somewhat flooded. The water proved deep at the ford and swept over the door into the car. lhe horse stopped and the car flowed over a fall down a rough bed. Mr. Houston managed to carry his wife phrtly- to the shore and then attempted to save the car, which overturned several times, the passenger being caught by the car and held under the water. Luckily the car again turned over, releasing him from the position miraculously. It took five hours to get the car to the bank in a very badly damaged condition. The contents of the car were lost.
The cable news in thia issue accredited to the "Times” has appeared in that journal but only where expressly stated is such newt the editorial opinion of th* •■Timet.”
