Democrats’ Error.

NEGLECTED LEAGUE ISSUE. APPEAL MADE TOO LATE. MONEY AND SKILL BACKS HARDING. [By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.] (Received 30, 8.55 a.m.) New York, Oct. 29. Non-partisan observers arc of the opinion that the election will not be an honest referendum on the League of Nations. Though it will be so misconstrued, the League has a powerful appeal of real strength, but Democratic campaigners failed to realise this at the outset. They have now begun to appreciate it, and have forced the issue forward with vigour during the past week, resulting in reaction favouring Governor Cox, but this is apparently too late. Senator Harding’s party has money and organisation tor sKiltul effective campaigning, which Governor Cox is lacking. Democrats accused Senator Harding of a campaign of millions, but it is with envy they watched the money flowing into the Republican exchequer.

Senator Harding is also favoured by reaction against so-called Wilsonism. It is thought that Governor Cox’s heritage from President Wilson has been a burden rather than an aid.—(A. and N.Z.)

WILSON ENDORSES COX. SHOWING THE WORLD DEMOCRACY. (Received 30, 1.50 p.m.) Washington, Oct. 29. President Wilson sent a letter to Governor Cox, expressing admiration of the latter’s course throughout the Democratic campaign, and predicting that Cox -will receive the voters’ emphatic endorsement. The President stated: As a voter I want to express by entire confidence in you. It is my confident hope that under your leadership we may carry the National Government’s policy forward along the path of liberal legislation and reform, until the whole world will again see an illustration of the wholesome strength of democracy.”— (A. and N.Z.) PRICE OF PRESIDENCY. cox out-d‘ollared. TWO PARTIES’ EXPENSES. New York, Oct. 28. The Republican National Committee has announced that 3,440,000 dollars will be spent on the campaign to elect Senator Harding. The Democratic National Committee has announced that the total expenditure of the Cox campaign will be 870,000 dollars.—(A. and N.Z.)
