A Wellington writer says:—The Champion Plate, though run at a time when the course was very cut up, was well contested, but in the end that good sort, Amythas, beat the opposition pointless. The field went out of the straight and turned into the back stretch well bunched, but just before reaching the seven furlongs post Arrowsmith was rushed to the front. The speedy black quickly got a break on the field, and round the bend to the straight he was a long way clear. He still had a chance at the bottom of the 1 straight, but he djd not continue his run,

and Karo, who had made up a lot of ground, was going so well that she looked likely to win by a good margin. However, at the distance, Amythas went through the field fast, and with a magnificent finishing run cut down Karo and won by three lengths.
