BOXING.
HOLMES DEFEATS VOLAIRE. LITTLE OPEN /FIGHTING. (Special to “Tribune.”) Dannevirke, July 22. The Dannevirke 'Boxing Association’s tournament at the Town Hall drew a crowded house, patrons being present from the West Coast, Wellington. Wanganui, Palmerston North, Hustings, Napiqr and intermediate towns. The amateur bquts were interesting. P. Hanna, of Hastings, known as the “Terrible Turk,” scored a victory oyer Carr, of Wellington, who was handicapped with an injured nose and did not make as good a showing as at Wellington recently. G. Curran, of Dannevirke, turned the tables on Redwing, who beat him at Grcymouth some time back. The West Coaster was inclined to hold and was also suffering from the effects of a recent attack of influenza. . THE BIG FIGHT. 1 The big fight between Holmes and Volnire for a £250 purse while not particularly spectacular was a hard fought and clean contest throughout. Holmes early established a lead and did more effective work in what little open fighting there was, and was faster on his feet than his opponent who however, quite held this own in .the in-fighting. The verdict in favour of the winner was popularly received and svas the only one possible considering the way the fight went.' j
