A special meeting of the Waipawa Borough Council was held on Thursday evening to consider the question of a rise in wages of the Council’s employees in consequence of the increaed cost of living. The Council was unanimously of opinion tuat an increase was warranted, aud after a general discussion as to what increase should be granted it was resolved that the increase of the general labourers be risen to 12/6 per day, also to raise the pay of the waterworks engineers, gasworks manager and the latter’s assistant by 6d. per day and increase the salary of Miss Sebley to 28/- per week'. It was further resolved to

increase Mr. Pletcher’s salary to £225 per annum, members eulogising the excellent service rendered by him in the dual capacity of eiers and overseer.

The farm of Mr. E. H. Brewer, of 410 acres, situated on the Waipawa Tiko road near the Mangaonouba bridge was submitted to auction at the Municipal Theatre on Saturday and attracted a large number of the public seeking laud. Bidding started at £23 and was eventually knocked down to Mr. Olaf Carlson oi Anawa for £26 10/-. A very welcome rain fell here on Sunday evening for about three hcurs and on Monday afternoon heavy thunderstorm broke over 'the town and the jain which continued for over an hour caused the water channels to overflow. _
