REPUBLICANS HOPES. THAT SENATE WILL RATIFY. PRESIDENTS PROTEST. AGAINST LORD GREY’S LETTER. I By Cable.—Prsaa A»«o«jiaUon.-Copyright. 1 New York, Feb. , The New York World’s Washington correspondent states that it is reported the Republican leaders in the Senate plan to have the treaty ratified with the Lodge reservations slightly modified. The plan is based on the assumption that there is enough of the Democratic vote carry the ratification. The New York “Tribune” Wasnington correspondent states that it is rumoured President Wilson is considering sending informal representations of protest against Lord Grev’s letter to the British Foreign Office. It is said Dr. Wilson considers the letter an attempt on the part of the British authorities to inject themselves into the political situation in the Senate, arising out of the treaty fight. Messrs Lansing (Secretary of State) and Tumulty (U.S.A. Prew. Secretary) declined to comment on the rumour. ‘ i SIX VOTES FOR U.S. JOHNSTON’S AMENDMENT. Washiugton, Feb. 4 Senator Johnston in the course of a statement said:—“l intend bringing up again in the Senate my amendment to the League Covenant, by which the United States’will also have six votes in the Assembly of the League.”
