Shipping “Tie Up."
AUSTRALIAN TROUBLE. BECOMING SERIOUS. CONTROLLER’S INACTIVITY. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.! Sydney, Jan .6. Shipowners complain at the alleged inactivity of the Shipping Controller in connection with the engineers ’trouble. Vessels of interstate companies are under the control of the Controller, and the owners are powerless to make any, move towards settlement unless instructed. With the view to getting the Niagara away, the Union Company, which is not controlled by the Controller, has offered to concede the engineers’ demands, subject to conditions made in the final settlement between the Controller and the union. Th offer was declined, but negotiations are proceeding.
STEWARDS AND PANTRYMEN. MELBOURNE BRANCH FOLLOWS SUIT. (Received 7, 10.20 a.m.) Melbourne, Jan. 7. Marine stewards and pantrymen have decided to support the decision of the Sydney branch. [The Sydney Stewards’ and Pantrymen’s Association demanded increases in pay ranging from twentytwo to twenty-seven and a half per cent;, overtime pay for Sundays and holidays, an eight hour day while at sea and intermediate ports and six while in terminal ports, a month’s holiday for the chief steward and a fortnight for all other ranks on full pay.]
FIVE THOUSAND. IDLED. WHARFIES ASK FOR SUSTENANCE. (Received 7, 10.30 a.m.) Sydney, Jan. 7. As a result of the marine engineers’ strike all inter-State shipping traffic is at a standstill. Five thousand are unemployed and eighty thousand tons of shipping is idled. Sydney wharfies asked the Federal Government for sustenance allowance while the strike continues.— (A. and N.Z.)
