BIG BLAZE
CONFLAGRATION IN NELSONTHREE FIRMS LOSE HEAVILY. Nelson, Jan. 3. A disastrous fire occurred in a wooden building in Trafalgar street early this morning and resulted m the destruction of the premises of M. . Webster, provision merchants, part of Trathen and Co., drapers and milliners, and Shield and Co., wine and spirit merchants. The fire brigade fought with great determination but the flames having a good hold when discovered spread rapidly in the wooden building. Mr Webster is a heavy loser, no stock being saved. A good deal was saved from Messrs. Shield’s premises. Trathen’s clothing and millinery departments in a brick building, were saved but the main building, together with reserve stocks was totally destroyed. Trathens’ loss runs into thousands.
The origin is a mystery. The outbreak is believed to have started near. Webster’s premises. Insurances are: Trathen’s stock, £6850, building £750; Webster’s stock £7OO and building £600; Shields’ building £2OO, stock, owned by Levin and Co.
