MARINE FISHING INDUSTRY.
DEVELOPMENT SCH EM E, Auckland, March 20. Giving evidence before the Fisheries Commission, L. F. Ayson, Inspector of Fisheries, uiado the following suggestions :—
The scientific prospecting of the coastal waters, section by section, as recommended in this report of 1913, supplementary to his work in 1901 and 1907-8.
The scientific investigation of fish life on our fishing grounds. In this connection he considered a marine bio-, logical station somewhere in the north a necessity in order to acquire accurate knowledge of the life and habits of our market fish. The marine hatchery and biological station at .Portobello, Dunedin, is doing very useful work in this connection.
A lull inquiry into the methods adopted in Australia with regard to the packing and transjxirtation pf fish and the methods of State marketing and distribution of fish in New South Wales and Queensland, with a view to improving the methods of ‘transportation and distribution in the Dominion. Mr. Ayson also recommended State assistance to returned soldier fishermen .
