POTATO EXPORT EMBARGO.
GROWERS DEMAND FREE MARKET. Christchurch, .March 19. A large deputation of Canterbury potato growers waited on the Hou. \\ . D. S. MacDonald to protest against, the recent imposition ol an embargo on the export ot potatoes. Il was contended that there should be a tree market or the Government should buy the potatoes at a price equivalent to the Australian price, less shipping charges. The Minister pointed out that- the object of the embargo was to prevent a sharp rise, as was the case last year, to eliminate keen Australian competition and reduce the cost of a staple article oi food. The position would be fully gone into when the main crop was dug in two or three weeks’ time, and n might then be found possible to lift the embargo.
