Lassigny Battle

WHOLE OF THE MASSIF CAPTURED. I London, Aug. 15 (evening) The whole of the Lassigny massif has been captured.—(Times.) PALESTINE. AN IMMENSE RAID. ON JERUSALEM-NABLUS ROAD. (Received 16, 3.15 p;jn.) Cairo, Aug. 14. Mr. Massey writing on Monday night, says: The enemy lines astride the Jerusalem-Nablus road were raided on a several miles front by the London, Irish and Indian troops, with mos| successful results. Two hundred and fifty prisoners were taken, and from 150 to 200 Turks were killed or woundedThe main raid west of the road, against a line entrenched in the hills, involved the most difficult approach owing to the steep, rocky sides. Two columns, about three miles apart, moved against the hills on either side to flank the entrenchments. When the artillery barrage lifted the Indian troops in each column rushed the flanking hills, then the Irishmen, moving from the ends of the line towards the centre, got astride the trenches. So surprised was the enemy that many who were taken prisoner were actually firing at right angles to the direction of our advance. They lost numerous dead. While this main attack was progressing three subsidiary raids were carried out east of the Nablus road. In one raid the Londoners killed 50 men, in another the Indians killed 20, and in the third the Indians rushed the system of trenches. ! Thanks to the magnificent co- ■ operation between artillery and infantry, our casualties were excep- i tionally light.—(A. & N.Z.) | I LONDON NEWS ITEMS.
