H.B. EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the H.B. Education Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs G. F. Roach (chairman), G. Wildish, R. Soundy. P. G. Grant, G. McKay, G. W. Venables, J. C. Thomson, F. Hall, W. Oates and T‘. B. Burnard. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT. The chairman, Mr. G. F. Buildings: Tenders received foi the erection of additions at Rua Roa School were much higher than the grant approved by the Department The tenders have, therefore, been forwarded to the Department with a request to increase the grant t’< enable the Board to accept the lowest. The tender of Air. E. R. Skeet to erect additions to the Tologa Bay School, for the sum of £4lO has beer. aC ßoard d Election: The Returning Officer reports the re-election ot Messrs Oates, Soundy and Roach, as members of the Board, and the election of Alessrs Venables and Burl nard vice Alessrs Paterson and Kiik who did not offer for re-election. COMMITTEE WORK.

The following recommendation ol the Board in committee were adopted : That application be made to the Department for authority to purchase the reserve of 3| acres for school site at Hastings street south, at valuation, as offered by the Harbour Board, that- tenders be invited for the leasing of Blackburn School site ; that the Hastings South School be granted of- weekly for cleaning temporary schoolroom; that G. E. Nilsson’s’ (Garfield) application for increased conveyance grant, be de dined ; that Miss D. Priestly s application to enter the Training College be supported; that arising out of the medical inspector’s satisfactory reu-ort the Department be asked to provide the services Oi a physical instructor to follow the medical inspector; that as suggested by the conference of teachers, a uniform set of secondary school books be kept; that if the settlei s will find suitable building, rent free, a school be established at '-'live Grange; that in connection with teachers’ hygiene and winter classes those whose work is not satisfactory, lie approached; that it be a recoin mendation to the Department that steps be taken to inaugurate a conference of directors and supervisors of Manual and Technical instruction ; that at Makauri the out-office be removed and certain improvement effected; that a shelter shed and cycle shed be erected, at Gisborne East; that spouting and drains be renewed also sundry repairs (£lB 10/-) at Clive; that in future all desk materials be stock ed ; that the tender of F. Armstrong £375, be accepted for additions at Gisborne North.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE CORRESPONDENCE.

Applications from the various school committees etc. were dealt with as follows:— Napier West. That £lO be granted towards the erection of a bicycle shed, the question of additional site was oe ferred. Hastings District High School application for grant tor nlumbing repairs; Frasertown application for grant for window shades and Ngatapa, grant , 1 . Hatuma: Committee re-, commended to erect a live fence. Southern Board members to report on the removal of the fence. Wooalands Road : That this be established as a side school despite settlers protest; floors to be repaired. Puketitiri: Request for bridge referred to Middle Ward members Maharahara West: In connection, with their request for repairs, allowance. etc., half subsidy to made on any moneys raised, Fapatawa: Architects’ recommendations for alterations to be carried out despite protest. GENERAL BUSINESS. Canterbury Education Board asked opinion regarding leave of absence for teachers. —Copy of this Board’s regulations to be forwarded. Napger Teachers’ institute asked co-operation in efforts to review the Educational system.—A conference in this connection has already been arranged.

It was decided that a copy of the lectures by Sir Robert Stout and Mr J. W. Poynfron S.AL, be sent to each school and used in civic instructions. A resolution supporting the strengthening of the study in English Grammar in primary schools.—The public school syllabus contains considerable grammar study and a special scheme is now underway. A copjy of this is to be sent to the writers.

.The request of the Napier Technical College for co-operation in securing for the college representation on this Board was declined.

Accounts amounting to £10,096 14/2, were passed for payment.
