IN THE MEDITERRANEAN. (Received 11, 10.5 a.in.) New York, Aug. 13. A French 3000 ton transport has been torpedoed in the Mediterranean. —(A. and N.Z.) DESTROYER SINKS ONE OFF THE VIRGINIAN COAST. Washington, Aug. 12. The Navy Department announced that it is believed that a destroyer .‘sank a U-boat by means of a depth bomb a hundred miles off the Virginian coast. —(A. and N.Z.) Washington, Aug. 12The Navy Department has announced that oil was released by a U-boat near the entrance of the channel to Wilmington, Delaware, in the hope that the tide would float it in towards the shore. Instead the oil was carried past the Smith Island coastguard station. Soon after the attack three large oil spots, each an aero in extent, were observed. The effect of the gas on the victims lasted forty minutes. The effect was exactly similar to that of mustard gas. Montreal, Aug. 12. A U-boat mustard gassed a coastguard station on the American coast. Six of the coast guards were overcome. Tiie U-boat poured oil on the surrounding water from which the gas arose. —(A. & N.Z.)
