I GENERAL. I Pay sheet.—General £173 6 10, waterworks £lB 6'3. gas £163 4/5. The Mayor reported having at- ■ tended with Cr. Witherow, the Waipukurau Bridge Commission, and were successful in obtaining release from any liability to the borough.— ; Cr. Witlici ow said they had adopted, the same attitude as at the former! Commission, namely, that the M aijiawa Borough should not have been cited and their views were ulti-, mutely agreed to by the Commission. ' — Councillors congratulated the delegates on gaining release of the borough ratepayers from any further liability. The Mayor reported on the, conference convener! by him to consider District Hospital matters. Of all the local bodies invited to attend only the Waipukurau County, Waipukurau and Waipawa Borough were represented. He had called the conference not in the spirit of suggesting extravagance, in management, but to give those concerned an opportunity to discuss whether the present conditions could be improved,! and whether the hospitals at Danne-l virke and Waipukurau could not be managed more economically if they w-re under separate control. In i view of the ever increasing expenditure the enquiry was opportune ! although it did not imply bad man- • agement. It was to be noted that the southern end of the district took no steps to sever, which implied that the present district suited them. He was surprised at the apathy shown by local bodies. The Waipukurau representatives came with no mandate from their respective councils. He was satisfied that until the expenditure becomes very much heavier nothing will be done.-— Crs. Brewer and Witherow considered that, the Mayor bad done ail that, he could and deplored tile attitude of the larger bodies.

The Theatre Committee reported having inspected a new picture machine installed by Air. R. J. Pellow and Mero satisfied, after a practical demonstration, that the machine is practically fireproof. Authority was given to close the big slide in the machine room and insert two smaller slides thus doing away with the draught complained of by patrons. It: was also decided to put a close row of pegs in the dressing room and replace old sheets of iron on the kitchen roof with new ones. 'l’he Mayor reported that the Noxious Weeds Inspector had called attention to the growth of blackberries, etc., on the roads in the borough-—The Mayor thought it a question for cons.deration whether the council should git an estimate of the cost of clearing with a view oi the council doing the work or using the power conferred on local bodies to call on ratepayers to cut down any weeds adjoining their property to the middle of the road. —Cr. Witherow questioned the power, unless it could be proved that the weeds spread from the adjoining lauds.—The overseer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost oi clearing. The overseer reported that blackberries growing near the bush drain had been cut down for a certain distance and the remaining part would receive attention. On the overseer’s suggestion pipes are to b; laid under the footpath opposite Mr. Kirkpatricks.-
