A fairly large gathering assembled at the Assembly Hall, fast night to bid farewell to the Hastings draft of the 32nd Reinforcements, who take their departure for camp on Thursday morning. ’ His Worship the Mayor (Mr. H. lan Simson) presided, and in the course of his address to the recruits, said the continuity of the war could not appeal to them- They were now entering upon the tJrird anniversary of the war and be did not wish to make them sad. It appeared from the Russian set-back that the striuy-rte-would last a little longer. He knew that those now going would play the game and live up to the traditions of those who had gone before. He asked them to obey their officers. Discipline would not kill them and they would come back bet- : ter men. He would have more plea--1 sure in welcoming them back than I in hending them a«aj.

Mr. George Ebbett also addressed the recruits, and honed they would overcome all difficulties. _ _lt gratifying to see the spirit m whicn thev took it. The people of New Zealand had not made any Kreasacrifice, and he hoped they would make a fixed determination not. to allow their enthusiasm to diminish, but to assist in every way possible and contribute as liberally' as the}’ could to all patriotic funds for the benefit of our soldiers. He trusted the men now going would unhold the honour and reputation of Zealand and to make good all the time. He urged them to keen up the reputation of Xew Zealand as fighters and conduct themselves as men under all circumsances. He was sure thev would do their best-ythey could do no more. In conclusion he expressed his best wishes for their welfare and wished them a safe retUThe men were then presented with their badges by the Mayoress and their kits by Miss Luckie and Mrs. Fitzherbert, on behalf of the Ladj Liverpool Committee. . Dancing was afterwards indulged in to excellent music aunplied by Marbrook’s orchestra. Mr. J. Foot had charge of the floor," and the supper arrangements were in the hands of the Mayoress’ send-off committee. The sum of £32 I'6 was taken at the door. AT NAPIERThe Napier Municipal Theatre was packed throughout last evening, on the occasion of the kit-giving ceremony to members of the 32nd Reinforcements, who proceed to camp on Thursday. . . The Chairman of the Patriotic Society. Mr. J. Vigor Brown, M.P., presided. His Worship the Mayor. Mr. H. Hill, and Major Ringland were also presents The Regimental Band was_ in attendance, and rendered enjoyable selections, the opening selection being composed by Savage Hopkinson, bandmaster. MAYOR’S ADDRESS. The Mayor, Mr. H. Hill, addressing the audience, referred to the ever-growing popularity of these ceremonies—the vast audiences reminded one of the great interest the citizens had in the young men .who graced these important occasions. They were leaving us preparatory to i going to. Europe, w-herc they would make new associations and obtain new ideas which will bring them to realise, as very few of us do, the vastness and mightiness of the British Empire. As Old England fought over 100 years ago to oppose a man who desired to rule the world, so would these young men help the Motherland and drive back the Huns from Belgium and France and gain for us a lasting peace. A similar procedure to the xit-giving ceremony of to-day took place in Greece over 2000 yea"rs ago, when the young soldier was met at a public fete and obliged to make promises: (1) That he would never dishonour the arms of his country; (2) that he would never desert his fellow companions in time of danger; (3) that he would always fight for his home, religion and country no matter at what odds; (4) that he would help make his country more powerful ana famous when he lay down his arms than when he took them up. The men of our Empire are not fighting for the acquisition of land out for the cause of righteousness. The speaker in conclusion urged the men to acquit themselves, so as to withstand all temptations, and come back through triumph having performed their stern duty “manfully.” An unusually interesting musical programme was supplied by the Napier Savage Club as follows: — Songs, “Castalian Lament,” Savage S. Prime, “Soldiers’ March,” Savage Choir ; “Up from Somerset,” Savage Wilton; duet, “Watchman, What of the Night T”, Savages S. Prime and H. Keith; talk, “The Dauntless Three,” Savage P. Spiller; cello solo, Savage H. O. Macfarlane. The men were then presented with their kits by Mrs. J. Vigor Brown, assisted by Mrs. J. P. Williamuon, each man receiving hearty applause. VARIOUS FUNDS.
