Bishop, of the New Zealand Tunnelling Corps, who left Hastings with the 18th Reinforcements. has been severely wounded in the right leg. Sapper Bishop before enlisting was employed at the Grand Hotel. Mr. A. Charles, fruiterer, Station street, Hastings, received the sad intelligence by cable this morning that his son. Private Eric Charles, had been killed in action. The late soldier, who was only about 21 years of age, left with the 18th Reinforcements, and was. prior to enlisting, in the office of Messrs I.ntran. Williams and White. Mr. and Mrs. Charles will have the sincerest sympathy in the irreparable loss that has overtaken them. The late Lieutenant W. P. Thompson, third son of Mr. and Airs. T. J. Thompson. Hasting, -who was killed in action, was .educated at Havelock District School, where hb won a scholarship entithn<r him to attend the Napier Boys’ High School. He left there to enter the services of Messrs Rochfort and Son. surveyors, and, after finishing his articles there, he went to Knox College. He also attended lectures at Otago University at the same time, and acted as demonstrator in the School of Mines. From there he enlisted, and after gaining a commission with the 10th Reinforcements left for the front with the 15ths. In football he played in the firsts at Napier High School while he was there, afterwards playing for N.H.5.0.8. while he was in Napier, from which team he was chosen to represent Napier. While at Otago University he won his football blazer, playing for ’Varsity firsts. He also won many trophies at running at school and at outside sports.
