The Board of Education at Auck--1 ind yesterday referred to the Council of Education a report by Dr. Elizabeth MacDonald in regard to causes of absences from du.y ot female teachers, especially pufiiJ teachers. The report referred to the long hours spent in study bv pupil teachers, resulting in irregm larity of meals and curtailed hours ot sleep. Referring to frequent bieakdow’ns of assistant teachers, the doctor stated that the e iuse lay in too large classes, overcrowding, working coiidi.iow. and difficulty of country teachers getting reasonably good homes. The doctor said that improved health and happiness of teachers would not be gained until classes were reduced co forty pupils for one teacher. Al my women teachers got nervous exhaustion by devotion to a false andard of efficiency. There was too much working for external results, too much pressure for examinations and too little scope for originality and individuality.— Press \ sociation.
