A big®tiorr is being made by the Caiedoman Society to raise monei tor the. Y.M.C.A. Fund for soldiers at the front. The Society’s annual gathering wmeh is being held on AAednesdav February 28th., has been carehiHv arranged to give an enjoyable da vs outing. This is the tinrd occasion on wffiich the Society has run the gathering in aid of the war funcis. The Board of Education at Auck--1 ind yesterday referred to the Council of Education a report by Dr. Elizabeth MacDonald in regard to causes of absences from du.y ot female teachers, especially pufiiJ teachers. The report referred to the long hours spent in study bv pupil teachers, resulting in irregm larity of meals and curtailed hours ot sleep. Referring to frequent bieakdow’ns of assistant teachers, the doctor stated that the e iuse lay in too large classes, overcrowding, working coiidi.iow. and difficulty of country teachers getting reasonably good homes. The doctor said that improved health and happiness of teachers would not be gained until classes were reduced co forty pupils for one teacher. Al my women teachers got nervous exhaustion by devotion to a false andard of efficiency. There was too much working for external results, too much pressure for examinations and too little scope for originality and individuality.— Press \ sociation.
