WOMEN’S NATIONAL RESERVE.

The usual weekly shop at Hastings, in aid of the Patriotic Fund, was held on Saturday last, under the auspices of the AVornen’s National Reserve—Miss G. O. Neill, (assisted bv several willing helpers) being its representative. The results of the competitions are as follows :— AV eight of cake (donated by Mrs.; J. NeiU. Havelock North), was 71bs 3 3-Bozs. and Miss L. Jackson, Maraekakaho, whose guess was 71bs 3ozs, won the cake. The rug (donated by Messrs Phillips and AVright), was won by Mr. F. Jackson, Maraekakaho, who guessed 141 as the number of beans in a bottle, the exact number being 142. The boudoir cap (donated by Aliss E. Donald, Napier), was won by Mr. Collings, Napier, who guessed 905 as the number of beans in a bottle, the correct number being 901.

The clock (donated by Mr. F. L. Bone), was won by Air. W. F. Evans Havelock North, who guessed 957 as being the number of tacks in a bottle, the correct number being 972.

The box of chocolates (donated by Mr. Chapman) was won by Miss G. Gray, Ilasrings, who guessed 53 as the number in the envelope, the correct number being 54. ALLEGED ADULTERATED MILK

Art the Napier Magistrate’s Court x esterday, before Mr. S. E. McCarthy, b.2»'L, Horace lan Simson pleaded not guilty to a charge of selling to the Napier Dairy, milk containing insufficient solids, but also containing a proportion of added water.

Evidence given by Inspector Gardiner showed that milk supplied by defendant was for human consumption.

Air. F. AV. Raxvlinson gave corroborative evidence.

_ c. C. Hart shorn, proprietor of the Napier Dairy, deposed that he. had an agreement xvith defendant xiffiieh provided that the milk supplied in the morning xvas for town delivery.

Defendant said be sold the milk to the Dairy (,<>. to be made into butter and he received payment- for the amount of butter fat only.

His Worship pointed out that the milk xvas not found to be in accord ■ ance xxuth the agreement and he would consequently' be convicted and fined £lO with £9 11/- costs.
