The business at the Hastings Magistrate's Court this morning was disposed of in 45 minutes.

There was no medical examination at the Drill Hall, Hastings, last, night. No recruits put in an appearance.

Members of the Hawke’s Bay Liberal League are reminded of ar, important meeting to be held in St, Andrew's Hall to-morrow night. In the Wellington Supreme Court yesterday a verdict of not guilty was returned in the case of Tim Troy, Maurice Costello and Joseph William Scott, charged with conspiracy to cheat Alfred Crossley of £52 while playing a game of poker.

The trustees of the H.B. Children’s Home will make a special appeal at Hastings on Saturday, the 10th inst., when a house to house collection will be taken up for the support of the Homes. It is earnestly hoped that the public will give their usual generous support to such a deserving object.

In addition to the information already published on the subject of the prices fixed for wheat the Hon. W. D. S. AlacDonald stated yesterday that it was intended to guarantee wheat growers 5/5 per bushel in respect of next year’s crop, or. at the Government’s discretion, 5/10.— Press Association.

A meeting of the executive of Navy League, Napier branch, wan held yesterday afternoon in the Council Chambers, Mr. G. F. Morley occupying the chair. The business before the meeting was the winding up and allotment of the Royal NavySailors’ Dependents’ Fund. The statement, duly audited, showed that the sum of £4589 5/- had been raised from all sources. The only expense incurred was an amount of 16 6 for stamps. The sura of £4ooo having been already remitted through the Hawke’s Bay War Relief Association to the Navy League in London, the executive unanimously- agreed to forward the balance of the amount in the same wav to the Navy League for the benefit of the widows and orphans and oilier dependents of the Navy, making a total contribution through the Napier branch of the League of £4588 8/6. The thanks of the League were tendered to the National Bank for kindly remitting all bank charges and to Mr. C. Douglas Wilson for auditing the statement gratuitously. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.

This morning, the Military Service Appeal Board, which is sitting at Napier, adjourned for half an hour out of respect to the memory of the late Dr. McTYab.

Mr. Foster Brook, of Hastings, has received a cable from his son Lieut. Cyril Brook, stating that the 19th New Zealand reinforcement* had arrived at their destination, all well.

“We have had a very large number of rejects in this district,” said Mr. Poynton. S.M., at. the Military Service Appeal Board. “H does not speak much for the men’s health.”

“There are very few shirkers that we have struck yet,” said Mr Poynton, S.M.. at the Military Appeal Board sitting at Napier to-day, “There have been very good grounds for appeals.”

Donations of magazines, or reading matter in any form, will be gratefully received at the Old People's Home, Parke Island, as their stock is nearing exhaustion. Thia is an excellent opportunity to help provide a little pleasure for the feeble inmates of that Institution.

The Labour Department, is taking action against the Blackball tninera who went, on strike recently. The miners canrn out because the company refused their demand to pay bin boys for time lost since Christmas. although the previous practice had been to pay them only for time worked,—Press Association. Some little while hack mention was made of vaudeville entertainments being held in Hastings and Napier. It is now understood that arrangements are nearly completed for a vaudeville turn once a week in both towns. The circuit will commenec from Auckland and extend to ’Wanganui. A local stock dealer had a bad run of luck the other day. Buying on the top of the market he purchased a line of 300 head of cattle in the Palmerston North district. He brought his purchase Io Hastings, the market price fell, and ho had to dispose of his line at a loss of £2 a head, an out-of-pocket deal of £6OO.

King George's appeal in connection with the British Red Cross has drawn magnificent response from the people of Smithland and the treasurer transmitted £4600 to Wellington. There are still some a mounts to come in and it is certain Southland will occupy a gratifying position when the figures for the whole Dominion are available.— Press Association.

The general committee of the Reform League for the Hawke’s Bay electorates has passed the following resolution “That this committee places on record its high appreciation of the services of the late Honf. Dr. McNab and desires to express its sincere regret at his sudden death ; a copy of this resolution to be forwarded to the Prime Minister ami to the Liberal League of Hawke’s Bay.’’

A conference of delegates of tho New Zealand Master Plumbers* Federation open«>d yesterday, Mr. William Judd (Wellington) presiding. The report stated that the year flan been a busy one and expressed -appreciation of the services rendered to the trade by Mr. .1. S. Douglas as the master’s representative on the Plumbers’ Board. Morley occupying the chair when the joint treasurers of the Royal Naw Sailors’ Department’s Fund submitted the balance-sheet. This showed a total contribution of £4589 5/- from all sources and the whole of this amount less 16/6 for stamps, being the only expenditure, was voted to the Navy League, for the benefit of the widows, orphans and dependants of the officers and men of the Navy.
