THE AURORA’S MESSAGE.

THREE EXPLORERS DEAD. CAPTAIN MACKINTOSH, CHAPLAIN SMITH AND SECRETARY HAYWARD. Wellington, Feb. 5. The wireless message from the Aurora reads as follows The Aurora arrived at Cape Evans on January 10th and relieved the seven surviving members ol Shackleton's Expedition namely:— A. Stevens. M.A.. B.Sc., lecturer in geography in the University of Glasgow, geologist and chief of the scientific staff. Ernest Joyce, in charge of the dogs. J. L. Cope, 8.A.. M. 8.. surgeon. 11. E. Wild, in charge of the stores. R. W. Richards, physicist. Irvine O. Gaze, commissariat officer. . . A. Eit-h Jack. M.Sc.. physicist and assistant biologist. AU the above were found well. I regret to report that during the second year of the expedition, the deaths 'of the following members occurred : — . Rev. A. P. Spencer Smith. Captain Aenas A. L. A. Mackintosh. ! Mr. V. G. Hayward. The Rev. Spencer Smith died of scurvy on the Barrier on March 9, 1916. “ Captain Mackintosh and Mr. V. G. Hayward perished on May 8. 1916. being overtaken by a blizzard which broke up the sea ice over which they w ere attempting to cross from Hut Point to Cape Evans.

The Aurora left McMurdo »ouna on January 19 and should arrive in Wellington about February 10. The "uext-of-kin are :— Smith, mother. 51 Palace street, Westminster, London. Mackintosh, wife. Ethel, Indens, Bedford. England. Hayward, mother. Ecklinville, Connaught road. Harlesden, London. fCapt. Aenas Mackintosh. R.N.R., was in command of the Ross Sea party. He was a member of the Shackleton Expedition of 1907-9, and was subsequently of the lano partv. The Rev. A. P. Spencer Smith. 8.A.. F.R.Hist.S., of Merchiston College. Edinburgh, was chaplain and photographer to tin; party. Mr. V. G. Hayward accompanied the party as secretary.]
