Mr. and Miss Beak, of Auckland, are visiting Napier.

Mr. and Mrs. Stan. Hannah, who have been on a motor tour of Auckland and district, returned to Napier yesterday.

“The Rebound of Action” will be the theme of the Rev. M. A. Rttgby Pratt’s discourse at the Hastings Methodist Church, to-morrow morning. At the evening service Mr. Pratt will speak on “The Battleground of Life.” The choir will render an anthem. Mr. Charles Alfred Budge died rather suddenly at Hawera on Saturday last. The deceased held many public offices in Hawera, and was for years clerk and treasurer to the Hawera County’ Council. He was born in Blenheim in the year 1860, and was a son of the late Mr. William Budge, surveyor, who came to Nelson with the earlv settlers. Mr. Charles Budge was educated at Nelson College, entered the Service of the National Bank at Blenheim in 1876, and was subsequently 7 at the Bank’s branches at Wellington, Reefton, Greymouth, Christchurch, and Nelson. In 1883 he removed to Hawera, where he settled and remained until his decease. He was always a keen sportsman and athlete. As a footballer, when only seventeen he represented Wellington in interprovincial matches, and was one of the earliest members of the Wellington Athletic Football Club. The resignation of Mr. Chas. Douglas, as secretary of the Napier Chamber of Commerce, which position he lias held for the past nine years, was received with deep regret at Thursday’s committee meeting. The chairman in voicing the feelings of all members as regards the pending loss of an extremely valuable secretary, said he had not only carried out perfectly the works entailed by that office, but had at all times during his secretarial reign, had the work and interests of the chamber at heart and had gained much valuable information for them. Mr. McLernon said it was nothing short of a great misfortune the losing- such a valuable officer, and it was decided that a sub-com-mittec consisting of Messrs. R. L. Patterson, A. C. Matheson, S. McLernon and Chairman be appointed to meet Mr. Douglas with a view to inducing him to withdraw his resignation. Mr. Douglas, in thanking all members for their kindly remarks, said he himself regretted his resignation, but it was almost ah impossibility: for him to give the proper personal attention necessary, when holding such an office.
