: On Tuesday afternoon it was reported to Constable Herlihy that a horse and trap with two men had gone over the Manawatu Gorge into the river. From enquiries made it appears that Messrs O. Thompson and C. Patterson were driving from Ashhurst through the Gorge to “Tiiompson’s camp,” when a motor car driven by Mr. J. Wright, of Pahiatua, approached from the oppo- . site direction. It is supposed that the horse shied at the car and made a dive with the trap and occupants for the river bed below. By wonderful good luck the occupants managed to get clear of the trap before it crashed on to the rocks. The trap was smashed, but the horse appears to have been only slightly injured, as it was subsequently found cropping the grass on the edge of the river. Both the occupants clambered up the bank and eventually reached the camp. Instead of preaching a formal sermon in aid of hospital funds, the Bishop of Birmingham recently spoke of his experiences with wounded soldiers. ‘‘l remember.” he said, “having to tell a young fellow that after all the care and attention that had been given him he would never see upon this earth, and told him as gently- as a man ean be told such a thing as that, and then I watched him. A few big tears rolled down his face. Then for a few minutes hiheld my hand and was quite calm, and then he loosed his grip upon me and.’.ov-r to his locker I\. t ■ ly--.1. he took out hi. mouth organ. Teat had been hi> companion away out there, and he just played a certain number of his old Scottish tunes on that mouthorgan. That man 1 have seen dozens of times since. He is now at St. Dunstan’s Hostel, where he is likely to prove a capable man in many- respects. Not one word of complaint has that, man uttered.”
