ASSAULTING A CHINAMAN.

’TO TBS XIHTOr. ■ i Sir, —I think any fairminded per- i son must- feel the strongest indigna- ; tion at the outrage committed against a -helpless Chinaman, as. re- < ported in your paper of this evening. • It seems to me that the action of the police in prosecuting the authors of this outrage is to be highly commend- ' ed. 1 trust that someone in an in-' fluential position will express their ] opinion in no unmistakable manner, ; that it should not go forth to the ’ world that offences of this kind can! be committed against anyone, es- ■ pecially those who are foreigners. We are always boasting of our love of fair play (and 1 think with justice), and if no one makes it their business to assure the Chinamen in our midth that justice will be dealt to them, then it will be plain that | th'ere is no fundation for our boast- | ing. There is one portion of the j evidence to which I should like to ; draw the attention of your readers. | The defendant, giving his evidence ! on oath, swore that the Chinaman; struck him with his whip. One of i the defendant's witnesses swore the I Chinaman struck the defendant three times with his whip. The j Chinaman swore that he had no ; i whip. One side committed perjury; i which side was it ? Whoever con;- ; mitted the Perjury deserves to be j severely punished. 1 will ask your I ; readers to refer back one or two • days to the report from Taradale of the very generous way the Chinamen subscribed to the War Relief Fund.
