FOOD PRICES.

BRITAIN’S PROBLEM. (Received 1, 1.30 p.m.) London, Oct. 31. Probably the Government will attempt collective buying of sugar, wheat, meat, and other articles, both in foreign and home markets. The Government is already buying three quarters of Argentine food exports and most probably will soon buy the whole. The Government is also considering whether to allow the making of bread with a mixture of wheat and maize which is just as nutritious and digestible as wheat alone. It is quite possible to increase the addition of maize to' twothirds. But whatever measures are taken food prices will inevitably rise. There is a real war shortage owing to the lack of labour; and ships.
