The American consul at Queens? town cabled that the Rowanmore bound from Baltimore to Liverpool, was attacked by a submarine which shot away her steering gear. The Rowanmore stopped, and the captain signalled that he was abandoning the ship but the submarine continued to shell the boats after they had cleared from the ship. There were no casualties. Seven Americans were aboard. [A cable on October 30th stated that the Wm. Johnston’s Co.’s Rowanmore (10,000 tons) had been torpedoed. The report that there were Americans aboard caused the American State Department to investigate as to whether Germany was adhering to her submarine pledges.] THE SUBMARINES.
