RESISTING ARREST.

AT HASTINGS. An exciting incident occurred in Hastings on Saturday afternoon. Detective AVard, of Napier, apprehended a man named Grant in the Grand Hotel, on some charge or other, and whilst conveying him through the back yard of the hotel, the man, a powerfully built fellow, turned on the Detective and dealt him two or three smashing blows in the face. He then made a bolt for it, the detective being too dazed for the moment to give chase. However, a little later, Constables Henry and O’Brien set out in search of the offender, and from information received, the man was located near Queen’s Square. On seeing Constable Henry approaching, he made another dash for liberty, but the constable was too fleet of foot and soon collared his man, when another struggle ensued, until the timely arrival of Constable O’Brien. The man still resisted and put up a good fight, but was eventually overpowered and conveyed to the police station. He was conveyed by train this morning to Napier.
