The following is the quota for 23rd Reinforcements, including all shortages on old and new basis: — Auckland Military District.

STATEMENT BY DEFENCE MINISTER. Wellington. Oct. 27. The Hon. J. Allen, Minister for Defence, stated to a reporter today that certain proposals regarding recruiting are to be submitted to Cabinet to-morrow.

“Rolls for the First Division are so far advanced now,” said the Minister, “that the department car ascertain approximately the number of men in Division One, in each group, and wo hope to be able to call in the 23rd Reinforcements on readjusted quotas to be issued to-morrow.

“For the 23rd Reinforcements If. 10 have attested, and we are hoping to get, through the medium of section 23, 500 men in time for the 23rds, and we want about another 1100. They have got from now till November 11 th to complete the 23rd Reinforcements. Instructions have gone out to all group officers to have a special recruiting time throughout their groups, and we are calling upon all recruiting commit tees to do all they can to bring in voluntary recruits up to llt.h November, because we are not in a position to apply the compulsory clauses of the Act immediately. 1 do expect, however, to be in a position to apply these clauses for the 24t4h Reinforcements if required.” AN INCORRECT CABLE. “Certain newspapers,” continued the Minister for Defence, “have been reporting Mr. Massey as having stated at Home that New Zealanders don’t want forced men to fight side by side with volunteers. I felt that statement was so contrary t 1 Mr. Massey’s views as expressed to inc that I telegraphed to him what the newsnape-rs hud reported him to have said. On the 25th (tele ber Mr Massey replied : ‘The press report referred to is incorrect. I said nothing which would .bear the ecnstruetion placed upon it in your telegram. What 1 said was that up tc the present it had not been necessary to enforce the Military Service ; Act, but that it would go into opera- , tion automatically when required. ■ No mention was made co New Zealand not wanting forced men to fight side by side with thos-' enrolled under voluntaryism.’ ’’
