With praiseworthy patriotism, an Auckland lady who is 011 leave in England is giving a great deal of her time to the service of the Admiralty. Mrs. Butler head mistress of the Auckland Girls’ Grammer School, who is an expert mathematician, is occupied in taking out intricate calculations with respect to proposed new guns and their effective use, her expert knowledge proving of wonderful value in this important branch of work. It is understood, says a Press Essociatiou message from Dunedin, that tho transport which arrived at Port Chalmers this week, had a perilous experience during the voyage from a European port to a, landing station in the Near East. About 1,500 troops were aboard, and the vessel was convoved by a small escort. The convov liad steamed a short distance ahead when oil was noticed on the surface ot the water. The back of a torpedo was noticed almost immediately, but the captain seized the wheel and swung the vessel sharply round, the torpedo passing a considerable distance astern. Nothing more was seen of the submarine.

Two vessels which are looked upon as exceptionally smart sailers are the barque Louisa Craig, owned by Messrs. G. H. Sales, Ltd., of Wellington, and the American barque Golden Gate, and New Zealand shipping men are at present watching with interest the race at present taking place across the Pacific. The Golden Gate left San Francisco on 9th. September with a cargo of benzine, coal oil, distillate, and motor spirit for Auckland, and ten days later the Louisa Craig cleared from San Francisco with a similar cargo for Lvttelton. The Golden Gate holds the record for the passage from Wellington to San Francisco, and the Louisa Craig has a record from Auckland to the Sandwich Islands. This being the case, news of either of the vessels is awaited with interest.
