NAPIER SOUTH SCHOOL.

COMMITTEE MEETING

• The Napier South School Committee met last evening, Mr. G. H. Cooke presiding. The headmaster (Mr. W. G. Martin) reported that the roll number for the past month was 394 and the average attendance 336. No more cases of diphtheria were reported and the attendance during the past fortnight improved considerably. Linoleum had been supplied to the teachers’ retiring room by the committee, and the Education Board had supplied six chains. The members of the Board visited the school recently and were all of the opinion that the room occupied by Standards 5 and 6 should ne renovated and the floor raised. The room is eminently suitable for the accommodation of Standards 5 and 6, because these classes are then removed from the vicinity of the junior classes, where the work done is simultaneous and at times somewhat noisy. It was decided to impress upon the board the necessity of renovating the hall and also ask them to endeavour to have the _ work put in hand during the Christmas holidays. A letter was received from the secretary of the Napier Ministers’ Association asking that the ministers of various churches be allowed to impart religious instruction to the children attending the school. The matter was deferred till nxet meeting.

It was decided to increase the caretaker’is salary 10 per cent during the progress of the war. Accounts totalling £lO 9/8 were passed for payment. Messrs Cooke and Dine were appointed a visiting committee during the ensuing month.
