A NATIVE BANKRUPT.

MEETING OF CREDITORS

PAKU DISCHARGED

The adjourned meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Ra-i whin Paku, Native, formerly of Waipukurau, was held at the Na-j peir Court House this morning. _ The Official Assignee, A. W. 1 Somerset Smith presided. Mr. M. C. Sproule appeared on behalf of the Official Assignee. Messrs Kent and Duff for Rupuha Te Hianga. Mr. Mackersey for G. F. Hall and o’her creditors. Mr. Carry for Murray Roberts, and Mr. Norris for B. J. McCormick. | Evidence was given by bank-1 nipt s wife, Rora Nokowaka Paku, as to bankrupt’s affairs etc. After the conclusion of the evidence, Mr. i :..it i'eroarkc I that lie was quite gatisii--i - iti< •Gdence given. In moving that the bankrupt be granted a speedy discharge, Mr. I Currie remarked that Paku had been a victim of circumstances. As a result of a very thorough investigation, he, and no doubt other creditors, were convinced that there had been nothing tainted with fraud or dishonesty in bankrupt’s transactions. Though Paku had acted without prudence, he did not think he should be visited *yith any direct or indirect penalties. It would be a graceful, act on the part of the- creditors if in view of the fact that Paku was now in camp and hoping to leave for the front with a commission that they give a speedy discharge. Otherwise Paku would probably lose his commission.

Mr. Mackersey seconded the motion that Paku bedischarged.

Mr. Kent remarked that Paku * should be publicly examined and moved in that direction.

The motion for discharge was carried by eight votes to seven. Mr. Kent’s motion lapsed.

He then moved that the whole of the assigned furniture be handed to bankrupt. This with a motion by Mr. Norris that the Official Assignee, collect the book debts was carried.
