The Russian Front.

* Enemy Offensive in Carpathians.

Effort to Circumvent Russian Left Wing.

[PRESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT.]

[AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.] Petrograd, October 24.

Over twenty enemy battalions, including the whole of an Austrian division, were engaged in a furious assault on Friday on the wooded Carpathians with the object of securing, regardless of cost, the heights east of Kirlibaba. All attacks were repulsed vzith crushing loss. One battalion was absolutely wiped out, and another was left with 170 survivors out of 850.

The Germans are ceaselessly attacking on the Bystritza, where breaking the Russian front would bring the enemy in the rear of Kimpolung, and the whole Russian left flank. The greatness of the stake explains the enemy’s sacrifices.
