The men of the 3rd and 4th Troutham battalion and , the reinforcements for the Trentliam Rifle Brigade. will leave Hastings for. camp on Tuesday morning next. The 9th reinforcements will leave here on the 19th ins ! . Commencing from November 4000 men will be required every two months.

A very impressive sen ice was held .at >St. Alary’s Church, Port Ahuriri, at 6 o’clock this morning, when a special mass was celebrated praving for peace aud for New Zealand soldiers at the front. The Rev. Fathers McCarthy and O’Sullivan officiated, and the church was pasked to the doors.

Tile fourth annual gymnastic and physical culture display in connection with the Y.M.C.A. will be heldin the Princess Theatre, Hastings, ■on Wednesday next. October 13. 'Tlie programme "'ill include Morris and country dances by the members of the Hastings Ladies Physical Culture Club. Several new acts will be introduced by the men.. Mr. \A. Smith of M.A.C. fame, will contribute musical items as will also Mr. Reg Pearce. The Hawke’s Buy Hunt Club has reclaimed good acceptances for their meeting to-merre-w on the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s course. The light rain whicb. fell to-day* should do the course a- vast amount of good, and given bright sunshine to-morrow, the meeting has every appearance of being a most successful ono. Already there are a large number cf visitors in toxx in and with good fields speculation should be brisk. A charge of 2 6 v ill be made for luncheon.

The JLA.C.B.S. social and dance held in, the Drill Hall, Hastings, last evening, in aid of the M ounded (Soldiers’ Fund, was a splendid success, between 80 and 90 couples occupying the floor. Excellent music was supplied by Mr. IL L. Ryan. A delicious supper was thoroughly enjoyed ,bv those present, being in the hands' of Mesdanms Maddigan and O’Sullivan, assisted by a strong committee of willing helpers. Dancing was kept up until a late hour, and altogether a most pleasant even iug was spent.

The Napier Technical College a very* enjoyable social last evening in the new gymnasium building. Tqfc, hall was beautifully decorated for the occasion, and an excellent supper was provided, all the delieaeies having been made by the pupils under ihe capttbh’ supervision of Miss Kibblewhite. Messrs. J. J. Niven and D. L. Smart attended to the comfort of the guests, the resuit being that the dance iiexer lagged. Misses Cox and Nikera and Mr. E. Fossey played “extras.” One of tiie most successful features of the dance was the electric, light effects obtained from the installation’ done by* the boy pupils. TWs was the first social held in the new hall, and its pronounced success augurs well for future fixtures.

•Staff-Surgeon Otley. Area Officer and Adjutant of the 9th Mounted Rifles, was iu Hastings to-day* making arrangements for two extra recruiting officers, and Messrs. Rosenberg. mercer, and AN. J. Robertson (c/o M'illiams and Sous) have kindly consented to act in that capacity. These gentlemen will enrol anyone wishing tto enlist, and will supply the necessary enlistment -cards and order forms for medical examination. This is a step in the right direction, and will no doubt be appreciated by intending recruits, who <fo. the past were put to considerable inconvenience iu not knowing where to go to tu hand iu tbeir names. Since Sergt.-Major Bell has been in charge of the local defence office, recruiting has been of a much more satisfactory* nature.

A large box of hospital reequisites is ready, collected by Mrs. Martin, and containing bandages, fomentation cloths, etc. Mrs. Egerton has kilibly made, and cut up 100 bags. - * All arrangements are well m ijano for the patriotic entertainment rand dance to he held in the Village HaL. Havelock North, to-morrow mght (Friday), and given fine weather a record attendance is expected. A special item on the programme will be a stirring patriotic son (with chorus), entitled “A Soldier,” which is quite new to the Hawke s Bay public, and is a sure reviver for patriotic spirt, besides -being an excellent recruiting song. Good music has been procured for the dancing and patrons are assured of a good evening’s enjoyment, and it will give them an opportfijnty of showing their patriotism in helping our sick and wounded soldiers,- A bus ■will leave the Hastings railway crossing at 7.30.
