BISHOP CLEARY.
Latest _ informal ion from Syrine.V, where Bishop Cleary is under trehfr.iiient in a private hospital, shdw< that, his Lordship is in a very serious condition (says Saturday's Auckland "Star.”) His .Lordship underwent an operation oil June 28tli, with apparently successful results. However, on June 26th a serious setback was experienced in a most severe nerve shock, which completely pros' trated the patient. For a time he was unconscious, and although consciousness has returned his Lordship is cpiitc exhausted. A cable was received last night by Rt. Rev. Mgr. Brodie, V.G., stating that there was a continuance of thesie nerve shocks, and that no improvement could lie. recorded. The most eminent specialists in Sydney have his Lordship under their care, and are untiring in their efforts for their patient. Very Rev. Dr. Ormond, formerly of Auckland, and secretary to the Papal Delegation in Sydney’, is constantly in attendance, seniling regular reports of his Lordship’s condition ; also Father Kehoe, ot Auckland, a life-long friend of the Bishop, has proceeded to Sydney by the Riverina. to act in conjunction with Dr. Ormond, and the presence of these two devoted priests will be a comfort to the Bishop in his suffering. The news of Bishop Cleary’s illness has caused a great shock to the Catholic body. It was known that his Lordship had seriously impaired his health by overwork, but it was hoped that a thorough rest would restore his strength, so that this serious development was not unexpected. Prayers are being offered for his Lordship in all the churches of the diocese.
