CH AI RM AN ’S MONTH LY R E PORT. Tlie cliairiiniii (Mi- L. McKay) presented the fallowing report at at the meeting of the Waipawa County Couucil last Friday:— [ Aeeompanied by Cr. Paulsen, I lie ; Overseer and Clerk, I inspected the Tuki Tuki river at the new concrete., bridge and authorised the Overseer to protect the southern bank from erosion by the river. We also inspected th« Aslmott-Waipukmau road ami arranged with Air. Jamieson to clean out Ihe drain to take the water oil the road. With th<' Overseer 1 met Air. AVinlove. Alavor ot Waipukurau, ami Mr. J..W. Binding at the Waipukurau traffic inidgi- and arranged lor the necessary willow plan ting at the northern bank ol Ihe river. I ailth-u i-ed the accept mice of tenders lor: —st)()vds. metal on WaipawnTikokino 10ml, :.i 2'2'. p<;r yard; llKlyds. metal on Waipawa-Origa road, at 3T<r', per yard, tlie siiccessiul tender in each ease being Mr. M ■ McMillan. As desired by councillors 1 visited : Wellington and interviewed the Minis-i ter ol' Radwu.vs in reference to his J)upartment’s stipulation lor an ovet-l bridge in connection with the proponed deviation to the Manavvatu bridge. Reference was made to the strong feeling on the part ol the councillors oi this and the Daimev irke County against the department’s requirements, also that the erection ol the bridge had already been delayed mer two vears. The Minister agreed to look into the matter Jui tlier with a view to reconsidering the stipulations. I interviewed the Minister ol Public Works and renewed the council s application lor a. lurtlier grant tor a bridge over the Upukororo stream, Gwavas Settlement. The, Hon. Mr. Fraser arranged to obtain reports on both applications. on receipt ol which he will give tlm matters iavourable consideration. J took advantage 01' my visit to Wellington to wait iqion the Minister oi Telegraphs iii reference to the council s telephone line. I explained the system on which the council had proceeded. the number of subscribers, miles ol line, and amount of capital invested, etc. 'l’he Minister said while he appreciated tlie valuable assistance rendered by the council in tlie direction o) granting telephone iaeilities to country settlers he could not lavourably consider an application lor a grant in aid. He. would, however, send a departmental engineer to inspect the council’s lines with a view to considering advisability- of his department taking over their control. I The council thanked the chairman for the report ami for the work entailed therein.
