CATHOLIC CONCERT.

AT HASTINGS. Despite the wet night there was a splendid attendance at the Catholic concert given in St. Patrick s Hall, Hastings, last evening, when a most enjoyable time was spent. The programme, which was a well-selected one, was well received, nearly all the items being encored. The first part opened with a chorus by the senior girls, which was prettily rendered. Madame Lelievre, in her usual pleasing style, rendered _ a violin solo, ‘‘Gems of Ireland ’ ; Miss Casey sang “A Soldier’s Letter,” and in response to an encore rendered “Where the River Shannon Flows.” Mrs. T. Bennett next contributed “Kathleen Mavourneen” in capital style, followed by an Irish Jig (in costume) by Mr. P. P. Desmond, who had to respond to an encore. Mr. F. Byrne, who was in fine form sang “Plymouth Home,” for which he was encored. This singer also contributed “Off to Philadelphia” and as an encore “The “Dear Little Girl.” The next item on the programme was a recitation by Mrs. Le Dall (Invercargill) “The Obstructive Hat,” and to an undeniable encore she responded wita “The Trials of a School Mistress.” Both items were a treat and were much appreciated by the audience. Miss Frances Maroney sang very nicely “The Minstrel Boy” (encored); Mr. O. D.- Avison rendered “Dear Little Shamrock” in a pleasing manner. The next item was “The Rosary,” sang by Mrs. D’Ath. This lady possesses a magnificent voice of full range ami power, and her singing last night was an exceptional treat, the audience demanding a double encore. In the secopd part she again delighted her audience with singing “Summer Nigat” and as an encore “Have you Forgotten so Soon.” Other contributors in the Second part were Mrs. T. Bennett, Miss Maroney and Airs. Le Dall, each item receiving vyell merited applause. The accompanists were Madame Lelievre, Mrs. Gebbie and Miss Molloy. At the conclusion Father McDonald thanked those present for their patronage, and to the contributors for the splendid musical treat they had given them that evening. He also thanked the secretaries, Messrs. D. Donovan and B. O’Sullivan, for their arduous duties in getting up the entertainment.
