HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

Wellington, Aug. 11. The Department of Commerce, has received the following cable messdga from the Hig-h Commissioner, dated London, Au3v.Bth (quotations, unless otherwise spt- ified, being average market prices on spot): —- Meat;-- generally.—About the beginning o’.' This week the meat-market was grei.t!y affected by the declaration of war, and an attempt was made to oh-' tain very high prices, as high as Bjd' per lb being demanded by holders of chilled hinds, with the result that all descriptions advanced in sympathy. The excitement du the market has subsided. It ivas not justified, as there is a large supply at present in store. The demand has considerably fallen off on account of the high prices. Mutton.—Canterbury mutton sd, North Island 4Jd, ewes 4Jd. Lamb.—Canterbury twos 7d, heavy weight fours 6gd, other than 'Canterbury 6gd. Beef. —Quotations for New Zealand are nominal, and holders are keeping back owing to the expectation of purchases for the Government. New Zealand hinds 7d, fores, old, chilled hinds 6d, fores 4 Id, Butter.—Th.e market is firm at an advance. Conditions are now more normal. Danish 140,'- to 150/-, New Zealand 140,'- to 145 -, Australian 130/to 140/-,Siberian 130/- to 140'-, Irish creamery 135,'- to 14-4/-. Cheese.—On account of war conditions, the cheese market has been irregular, but closed firm. Canadian and New Zealand white and coloured 78/to 80/-. The estimated Canadian cheese _ stocks at August 4th in London, Liverpool and Bristol were 163,000 boxes against 209,000 boxes at the same time last year. The New Zealand cheese stocks at August 4th were 10,500 crates, against 11,000 at the same time, last year. Hemp.—The market remains very depressed. No transactions are reported. Cannot give quotations during the present condition of the market. The output from Manila for the week was 26,000 bales. Wool.—Business is practically suspended. Quotations are nominally unchanged. Grain. —The markets are more settled. Australian wheat 4-5/'- c.i.f., flour 35 ex_ store, Now Zealand oats 30,'- c.i.f., New Zealand, beans f.a.q. (new crop) per 5041bs 37/-, New Zealand peas (partridge-) per 504) hs 54/-. There is more inclination to do business at these prices'for immediate delivery. No business has been done with forward shipments. It is reported officially that the Government is taking over all flour mills in the country. SW4IPUKURAU STOCK SALE. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having sold at Waipukurau yesterday 124 fat ewes at 20/-. Williams and Kettle, Ltd., report having sold the following stock at Waipukurau vesterdav: —4 fat cows £6 15/-. 3 at £7 7/-, 3 at £1 10/-, fat steer £6 12/-, fat cow £5, 1 at £5 6/-, 4 2-year steers £4 17 /-, 2 heifers with calf £5 1/-. 7 cous .and calf £3 15/-, 9 wearer heifers £2-17/-, 9 2-year heifers £3'ls/-, 3 yearling steers £1 12/6.
