CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.

FINAL ROUNDS.

[m nasß association.]

Auckland, Jan. 12. r The final round of the chess cham- £ pMmships commenced this morning. The pairing and openings were: Davies v. Dodds (Buy Lopez); Grier- & . ami v. Moore (Ruy Lopez); Miles v. (Centre countergambit); I’ Myers v. Mason (Buy Lopez); Beverne v. Gyles (four knights i fearue); Stewart v. Kelling (Centre oounter gambit); Wingfield v. Barnes (Kings, Bishops opening); £ James, a bye. At the midday adjournment the - games all appeared perfectly level with one exception. Wingfield has lost a pawn, all the others have •goal pieces and pawns, reckoning a knight as equal to a bishop. - The greatest interest lies in the games Myers v. Mason and Davies v. Dodds. In the former each has a , z rook and five pawns and the posi- ? tion looks very much like a draw. In latter, besides the queen, two nxiks and seven pawns each. Davies G has two knights. Dodds has a bishop and a knight, and neither side aj>pears to have any advantage.
