A new era commences in the history of Tauranga to day, when a start will be made with the drainage works and electric light and power schemes to cost £37,000. —Press Association.

Arthur William Petherick was charged on Saturday in the Master ton Police Court with having committed perjury during the hearing of a licensing case last month. He was remanded on bail.

Trade invariably shows a falling off immediately after Christmas, but on Saturday night the shopkeepers at Napier and Hastings appeared to be doing well. One well-known tradesman informed a “Tribune’ 1 reporter that he was “jolly glad things were normal again.”

A Wairoa Press message says that Mr. J. Alfred Waugh appeared on remand at the Napier Court this morning, before Messrs S. McLernon and J. Sandtman, J. P’s. charged with having stolen a pair of opera glasses. Sergt. Cummings said the accused had admitted taking the glasses. His fathqr was a very respectable man, though the report obtained from Wellington was unfavourable, he recommended that the accused, who had received very little schooling and was somewhat dull, should be leniently dealt with. The bench administered a warning to the accused, and fined him 30-, in default 11 days’ imprisonment .

An outbreak of fire occurred n Messrs. Phillips, Wright and Co.’s upholstering room (between the firm’s showroom and the premises occupied by Mr. AV. Beale), Hastings. on Friday night. The blaze was seen through a window by some passers by at about 10.30 o'clock. They forced their way into the build ing and endeavoured to beat out the flames yvith timber, but yvere unsuccessful. Timely assistance, however, arrived before the flames ha t made much progress, and with the aid of a few buckets of water. fire was subdued. The outbreak commenced in some straw which was lying on the floor. Very little damage yeas done.

There was a very large attendance at the farewell services conducted at the Napier Salvation Army Citadel yesterday, yvhen opportunity was taken to say good-bye to Adjutant and Mrs. Rowlands, who leave for Nelson to morrow, after having had charge of the district for the past eleven months. The Inspector-General cf Hospitals wrote to the Palmerston Hospital Board last week suggesting that a fixed scale of payment for nurses be drawn up by the Department for adoption by the Hospital Boards. Rivalry amongst the nurses would then be avoided. “It seems to me we will have to increase our salaries,” said the Chairman. “One sister has left, and though we have advertised we have had no applications. Another sister will soon be leaving to be married, and it seems to me this is a marrying hospital. (Laughter). I think the time has arrived when we should consider the question of salaries'.” Mr. Nash said be was glad the matter had been brought up. He would move that it be referred tc the executive to bring down a report uncn. Mr. Nash men tioned that he had spoken of the matter some time ago. The motion was agreed to.

About 100 officers ami non-com-misioned officers of the cadets from Gisborne, Napier and Hastings will have by the mail train to-morrow for Eeilding. where they go into camp for ten day s.

The receipts in connection with the Napier tramways are being well maintained and, if anything, show a slight improvement. Last week the takings amounted to £2OO/0/7, giving an average of £28.11'6 a day.

On Saturday afternoon a steam navvy in Ohuia quarry, near Wairoa, capsized, the men having a narrow- escape. Repairs are being effected, and in the meantime piledriving proceeds.—Press Association.

The Napier City Band enlivened the main streets of Napier on Saturdaj- night by playing various popular selections, and took up several very satisfactory collections in aid of the fund to enable them to attend the Auckland contests.

At Dunedin today, Frederick William Donaldson pleaded guilty in the Police Court to embezzling moneys from the Union Steamship Company, in whose service he was clerk. He was committed to the Supreme Court-for sentence.—Press Association.

During last month twenty cases of infectious diseases were reported to the Hamkc’s Bay Sanitary Inspector, of which 13 were from the Napier borough, 5 from the country, 1 from the Hastings borough and one from Napier South. The classification is as follows :—Tuberculosis 10, scarlet fever 4, diphtheria l, enteric fever 1, chicken pox 3, blood poisoning 1. Tyvo deaths occurred from tuberculosis.

The steamer Havre, which is manned with Chinese and Japanese, attracted considerable attention at the Breakwater yesterday. She is a comparatively small vessel, being only- 1200 tons or thereabouts, and though specially constructed to carry oil is fitted with all the most up-to-date appliances for working general cargo. The cleanliness of tlfe Itearoer was freely commented upoi> by those who paid a visit to the Breakwater.

The citizens' committee appointed to make arrangements for a presentation to Mr. S. F. Haszard* postmaster, who is leaving Hastings, met in Mr. J. A. Fraser’s office; this morning.'-'when it was decided to make the presentation of an illuminated address to Mr. Haszard and a purse of sovereigns to Mrs Haszarfl. at the Borough Council Chambers at; 8 o’clock on Wednesday evening the 21 instant. In the meantime circulars inviting contributions are to bp distributed throughout the district.
