DISASTERS AT SEA.

WRECK OF THE RED PINE

CAPTAIN EDEN’S COOLNESS.

Wellington, March 12.

Several members of the wrecked steamer Red Pine arrived at Wellington last night. When the ship struck the look-out man rushed to the forecastle and alarmed the sleeping crew. As the men left the ship Capt. Eden called each by name and found the cook missing. Capt. Eden, despite the fact that the water was creeping up foot by foot, and was just jon the deck line, rushed forward and found the cook asleep in his bunk. He would probably have been drowned like a rat in a trap but, for the captain’s action. As both men sprang from the deck, the vessel took her final plunge and sank. The men speak in the highest terms of Capt. Eden’s coolness in a trying situation.

U.S.S. CO.’S KOWHAI.

BEACHED AT DUNEDIN

Dunedin, March 12

The Union Company’s collier Kowhai, which left for Oamaru this morning, struck a mole at the Heads and had to be beached.

FATE OF THE TURAKINA

STENCH FROM THE CARGO

l2, noon.)

London, March 11

The Turakina has discharged wool and flax', but the rest of the cargo is under water.

The stench is becoming a serious matter and it will possibly become necessary to tow the vessel out to sea and sink her, owing to the cost of disinfecting being greater than the value of the ship.

The sanitary authorities are endeavouring to discharge the mutton.
