COLLECTION OF RATES.
A CHANGE DESIRED
The Waimate County Council is forwarding to all county council? the following resolution passed by that body in regard to the collection ot rates: —“That, in the opinion of this council it is desirable to obtain an alteration of the law relating to the collection of rates by having section 28 of the Rating Amendment Act. 1910, so amended that a charge of ten per cent, may be added to all rates unpaid at the expiration of two months from the demand thereof : and that the co-operation of other county councils be invited with a view of having the proposal carried into effect.”
It'is pointed out that while the Rating Amendment Act provides that a charge of ten per cent, may be added to all rates unpaid at the expiry of six months and 14 days from the demand thereof it is found that this provision retards payment of a large portion of rates until expiry cf the time limit. Several reasons are urged for something being done in the direction indical. ed. AVere the proposal put into effect the Hawke’s Bay County Council would benefit to tiie extent of over £5O.
