APPLAUSE TO ORDER.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I see by a southern paper that Sir Joseph Ward’s great policy speech at Winton—parenthetic applause and all—was apparently handed in for transmission by wire before it was spoken. Isn’t this delightful ? The paper in question suggests that it was a trifle risky to anticipate the points which would stir the audience .to ‘'vociferous applause.” but a vigorous and welldrilled claque would no doubt be on hand to see that nothing missed fire. It is refreshing to know that Sir Joseph’s promotion to the aristocracy leaves him still a true democrat, not too proud to continue the good old cheapjack methods. —I am, etc..
