THE HARBOUR LEAGUE.

HASTINGS BRANCH FORMED.

A well-attended meeting of representative men was held in Mr. David Whyte’s office, Hastings, last night, with the object of forming a Hastings branch of the Harbour League. Mr. Whyte occupied the chair, and explained that as the .polls closed on the 28th inst., the meeting had been called hurriedly that day in order to get to work at once.

Mr. George , Nelson explained that as the Act of last year extended the parliameptary franchise to residents in boroughs for the election of representatives on newly constituted harbour boards, the Harbour Ratepayers’ Association as at present constituted would be restricted in its sphere of activities. It was therefore thought best to form a Harbour League to meet the present position. He read the rules governing the Napier branch of the Harbour League, and said that body was doing excellent work. On the motion of Mr. J. Morley, seconded by Mr. Clarkson, it was resolved that this meeting resolve itself into a branch of the Harbour League, and that the rules guiding the Napier Branch be adopted by the Hastings Branch, Mr. David Whyte was elected Chairman.

A plan of campaign was drawn up, and it was decided to make a thorough canvass of the Borough. Four sub-committees, with power to add to their number, were set up. Each sub-committee to be responsible for effective work being done in the division of the borough allocated to its charge. The supervisors attached to the respective sub-committees are Messrs. David Whyte (No. 1 block), McLeod (No. 2 block), J. B. Hird (No. 3 block), and Newbiggin (No. 4 block). The supervisors meet to-morrow night and report progress. It was decided to hold a public meeting at the Mahora School House on Tuesday next, 28th inst., at 8 o’clock. Mr. G. Nelson and other speakers will address the meeting.
