A WANDERER’S DEATH.
BODY FOUND IN A RIVER. Christchurch, Feb. 12. The body of Terence McHugh, 71 years of age, was found in the Waimakariri river at White’s bridge, about 7.45 this morning. It appears that McHugh, who has no settled place of residence, travels about the Dominion picking up odd jobs, and was camped on the banks of the river beyond Belfast expecting to get some work at potato digging. Early this morning he was seen wading in the river, and about half an hour afterwards his dead body was found. It is assumed that whilst wading he succumbed to heart disease. A Savings Bank book showed that he had £2OO in the bank, deposits having been made in Wellington. As far as is known McHugh has no relations jn the Dominion, but it is believed that he has a nephew in Australia from whence he came to New Zealand about seven years ago.
