ICE FLOES.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Many of your readers have made enquiries as to the procedure adopted by ice-floes in the Gulf of Finland, being prompted no doubt by cablegrams lately received. Probably none of your staff have had any experience of such matters. I decided to refer to Capt. Widerstrom, the well-known ex-council-lor, who is a native of Helsingfors, and he informs me that there ifi ft’ small island at the place described and there can be no doubt that this island has been uplifted by the enormous ice-floes formed by the intense cold of winter, and it has bten carried bodily away with all it# inhabitants. lam not in a position to dispute this, as we have nevet been in Helsingfors, and I really must leave your readers to ferm their WS conclusions.—l am, etc. JOHN POLAR BEAR.
