Within the past few months spurious coins representing hundreds of pounds have been circulate 1 in New South Wales, racecourses being si levied principally for the purpose of passing them, as success was most, likely to bo attained there in the iiuny and bustle of the betting ring. possession ol one man were of a partii ulitrly good class, and it was indeed difficult to distinguish them from the genuine article. For some time Sydney detectives Lave been busy perfecting inquiries with regard to a certain matter, and six detectives went across to North Sydney and surrounded a house that had been suspected for some time. After a search lasting three houKs a complete coiner’s plant was found, together with 33 spurious sovereigns, and a lot of material used in their manufacture. Some of the jilant was dug out from behind grates, ether was found in the scullery, while u,e sovereigns had been ingeniously concealed in a blind used as a sunshade on a back balcony. The blind was tightly roiled up at the top, and the coms were wrapped in this, and inside a daily paper bearing the date of December Sth of this year. When the material had been collected, and it included lead, zinc, copper, tin, gold, a battery, a quantity of solution, and four dies, it was taken to the detective office, and two men were placed under arrest.
