A SAD STORY.
HOW A BRAVE BOY DIED. Some additional particulars are' published in the Rotorua papers in; connection with the death of a ' telegraph messenger named William Oldfield. The lad had been delivering telegraph messages ar the Grand Hotel, in company wU another boy. On the return jour ney a trial of speed on their bicvcles was suggested, and both I boys put the pace on and rode hard! towards the Post Office. At the Haupapa-street corner Oldfield was! a bit ahead, and turned to go into that street. He had misjudged
Perrin’s distance from him. however, and Perrin’s bicycle struck deceased’s at about its centre. Both boys were thrown violently, but Willie Oldfield was dashed against a telegraph post. The poor little chap’s head was badly cut. but internal injuries concerned Dr. Bertram most when he was summoned. On C hristmas Day the boys' condition assumed grave phases, and Dis. Bertram. Wohlmann. and Hay held a consultation, and decided to operate. They found that the liver was badly ruptured. The “Rotorua Times” says, that after the operation the postmaster visited him on Monday. Willie was just regaining consciousness. and looking up recognised the postmaster. “ Have ymi got another messenger *’ he asked. " I shan't be able to come for a while. ■ Yes. I've got someone till you re better." said Mr. Emerson. “ Mho ve yon got asked the sufferer. "Clarke." “<>h. that's all right." ami the little chap 'etuicd over and n'<-d.
