SEAMEN’S WAGES. Melbourne, Dec. 30. As a result of the conference between the registrar of the Federal Arbitration Court and representatives of the Steamship Owners’ Federation and the Federation of Seamen’s Unions, a provisional agreement has been reached for continuing work until an award of the court or a new and final agreement between the owners and the seamen has been‘obtained. The two parties have agreed to recommend the aceptance of the provisional agreement, which operates from January Ist, to their respective organisations. It is understood that the agreement provides for a compromise both as regards rates of pay and conditions. Both the Shipowners’ Federation and Federated Seamen have notified the President of the Arbitration Court that they are agreeable to accept the provisional agreement. It grants an all round increase of 10/- a month in wages and fixes an overtime rate of 1/6 instead of 1/and 1/3 previously ruling. It concedes preference to unionists.
