HAWKE'S BAY TIMES. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1870.

The last day ot 1870 is near its close as we issue our paper this evening. The year has been one which will be long remembered as marking an epoch in history; for grave and terrible events have occurred during its course, the effects of which none can foretell, but which will be felt and recognized for many years to come. Looking nearer home, we may remark that if the report which appears to-day in our telegraphic column is correct, the last week of the year has been marked by an event which will bring sorrow to us all. We sincerely hope, however, that the report may be found to be without foundation, and, further, that henceforth peace and prosperity may dwell in our land, so that to each and all 1871 may prove "A Happy New Year!"
